PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND DIABETES
by: Maureen Daniello RN, CDE
No matter how old you are or what kind of shape you’re in, physical activity can do a lot for you whether you have diabetes or not. According to the American Diabetes Association and National Diabetes Information Clearing House being physically active on a daily basis can improve your health. Below are some examples of how important exercise is whether you have diabetes or not.
What can a physically active lifestyle do for me?
Research has shown that physical activity can
- lower your blood glucose and your blood pressure
- lower your bad cholesterol and raise your good cholesterol
- improve your body's ability to use insulin
- lower your risk for heart disease and stroke
- keep your heart and bones strong
- keep your joints flexible
- lower your risk of falling
- help you lose weight
- reduce your body fat
- give you more energy
- reduce your stress levels
Physical activity also plays an important part in preventing type 2 diabetes. A major Government study, the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), showed that modest weight loss of 5 to 7 percent—for example, 10 to 15 pounds for a 200-pound person—can delay and possibly prevent type 2 diabetes. People in the study used diet and exercise to lose weight.
No matter how old you are or what kind of shape you’re in, physical activity can do a lot for you. If you’re interested in becoming more active, these steps will help you get ready for a routine that’s safe and enjoyable.
- Have a checkup and find out which activities will be safe for you.
- Choose what you’ll do for your routine and make detailed plans.
- Find out how physical activities can affect your blood glucose levels.
- Learn how to avoid low blood glucose and what to do if it happens.
- Plan how to have water, snacks and treatment for low blood glucose.
- Arrange a way to carry medical identification.
If you’ve never exercised before, you can find ways to add physical activity to your day. You’ll experience benefits even if your activities aren’t strenuous. And remember, find an activity YOU enjoy doing! Once physical activity is a part of your routine, you’ll wonder how you did without it!
