The First Step is to Test Often
Testing your blood sugar often can help you feel better day to day and help you reduce the chances you’ll develop diabetes-related complications.
Liberty makes it easier to test as often as you should with our Diabetes Supplies Service. And we want to make sure you know everything you need to about testing, so your results are accurate. We've provided a few tips below. And if you have any other questions, call us toll free at 1-800-376-1599.
Use the Right Test Strips
Using a test strip that is not recommended for your meter may result in inaccurate or failed tests, according to the
FDA and several major meter manufacturers. Meters are designed to be sensitive to the differences in test strips, including
different sizes, shapes, and types of chemicals used. The best way to make sure you are using the proper test strip is to read
the owner's manual that came with your meter.
Check for Accuracy with Control Solution
Always check the accuracy of your meter with control solution, which is used to ensure that meters are functioning properly. Control solution is developed to work specifically with one (or one kind) of meter. It’s a good idea to become familiar with the right control solution for your meter.
A drop of the control solution is applied to a test strip in the same manner as applying a drop of blood. The meter reads the control solution and provides a reading, which is compared to the "control range" listed on the solution package insert. If the reading falls within the indicated range, the monitor is functioning properly.
Take Care When Drawing Blood
You can’t check your blood glucose without drawing some blood, but with the right lancets and lancing devices, this doesn’t have to be a painful procedure.
Lancets are sharp needles or blades used to obtain blood samples for glucose testing. Lancing devices are the tools used to hold the lancets firmly in place and guide them to your testing site, to reduce the pain associated with testing. You should switch your testing sites often.
Lancets can only be used once and must be disposed of in a safe container to prevent puncture wounds.
Lancing devices should be cleaned and disinfected at least once a week. To clean, remove the lancing
device cover and wash in warm, soapy water. Rinse well and allow it to thoroughly dry. Lancing devices can
be disinfected using 70-percent rubbing alcohol or one part vinegar and three parts warm water.
Do not submerge the lancing device.

Keep Track
Keeping good records of your glucose tests helps you know that your diabetes management program is effective. Many meters help with this by storing data electronically. But it’s also helpful to keep track of what was going on while you were testing. Take notes about when and what you ate, whether you exercised or any other events that could affect your blood sugar.
